چکیده

Enlarged peripheral nerves are one of the cardinal manifestations of leprosy and the involvement of the great auricular nerve is well known. Enlargement of the “transverse cervical nerve” (also known as “superficial cervical” or “transverse cutaneous nerve of neck”) in leprosy is rarely reported. As depicted in Figures 1 and 2, we observed enlargement of bilateral transverse cervical nerves along with enlarged great auricular nerves in two patients with leprosy. The enlarged transverse cervical nerves were firm, cord-like, and tender on palpation. Their independent emergence, separate from the great auricular nerve, from the posterior border of sternocleidomastoid and an anteriorly directed course serves as an important guide in detecting them. Sural nerve biopsy revealed presence of lepra bacilli in both the cases (Figure 3). Similar to the great auricular nerve, transverse cutaneous nerve arises from second and third cervical nerves, turns

High-Resolution Sonography: A New Technique to Detect Nerve Damage in Leprosy

BACKGROUND Leprosy is the most common treatable peripheral nerve disorder worldwide with periods of acute neuritis leading to functional impairment of limbs, ulcer formation and stigmatizing deformities. Since the hallmarks of leprosy are nerve enlargement and inflammation, we used high-resolution sonography (US) and color Doppler (CD) imaging to demonstrate nerve enlargement and inflammation. ...

Electrodiagnostic Evaluation of cervical root involvement among patients presenting with radicular pain: Short Communication

Cervical spine pain is one of the most common problems of the spine and upper limbs, which can be axial or radicular. The present study aimed to electrodiagnostically evaluate cervical root involvement among patients presenting with radicular pain.  The population was selected using simple random sampling from patients complaining of cervical radicular pain and unilateral or bilateral upper ext...

Predicting Unilateral Postlaminectomy C5 Palsy by Measuring C5 Exit Foramen Area on Preoperative Computed Tomography

Background. Postoperative C5 motor palsy is known as a common complication not only after cervical laminectomy but also after anterior discectomy. There is no consensus to verify any of the proposed mechanisms of C5 palsy following posterior cervical decompression. The authors of this article have found that C5 palsy is more common among patients with smaller C5 root exit foramen area. The purp...

Extensive sonographic ulnar nerve enlargement above the medial epicondyle is a characteristic sign in Hansen’s neuropathy

OBJECTIVE Earlier studies have shown sonographic enlargement of the ulnar nerve in patients with Hansen's neuropathy. The present study was performed to determine whether sonography or electrophysiological studies can detect the specific site of ulnar nerve pathology in leprosy. METHODS Eighteen patients (thirty arms) with Hansen's disease and an ulnar neuropathy of whom 66% had borderline tu...
